I am the Founder of Pigeon Solar Panels and your local solar panel technician in Newport. Working within the industry for over 10 years I pride myself on doing things the right way. We were recently covered in the news, read the story here
Making sure your solar panels are kept cleaned and well maintainted ensures that they are running efficently and also extends the life of the panels avoiding costly repairs. It is important to have these panels cleaned professionally as they can be easily damaged by harsh cleaning chemicals which can void the warranty on the solar panels, a mistake you certainly do not want to make!
Pest proofing goes hand in hand with ensuring you get the most out of your solar panels as pigeons building their nests beneath your solar PV system runs the risk of them damaging the solar panels or the cables, which could result in problems with your solar PV system. You can safeguard both your solar panels and your investment in green energy by bird proofing them.
Newport’s terraces and newer estates sit between the Severn Estuary and the South Wales valleys, so panels get estuary grime and plenty of rain. Pigeons from the city centre and gulls from the river are quick to nest under arrays.
We clean with deionised water and fit mesh or SolaSkirt to keep birds out. Rope access means steep terraces and valley homes don’t need scaffolding.
Areas we cover near Newport: Caerleon, Rogerstone, Bassaleg, Malpas, Langstone, Duffryn.

How often should you clear your solar panels? In the UK it does very much depend on where you are located as some areas (like seaside properties) would require more frequent cleaning, homeowners should clean solar panels once every six months on average.
The best times to have your solar panels cleaned are towards the end of the autumn or towards the start of winter, as the greatest amount of buildup and debris will accumulate during these two times each year. It's advised to clean them more frequently, around every three months, if they're installed in an area with a lot of dust, sand, pollen, or dirt.
Your panels are more "fit and forget" in terms of maintenance requirements than, say, a boiler. However, to keep your panels operating at their best and to guarantee that the panel warranty is upheld, cleaning every six months is recommended. The majority of solar PV (photovoltaic) cells function best when they are clear of debris and clean.
In certain cases, dust can progressively cover the cells, lowering their capacity to absorb sunlight over time. Even with self-cleaning solar panels, those which have had a nano coating applied, this nano coating is washed away over time and would need to be re-applied around every 4 years to avoid increased maintenance on your solar panels.
In the end, you'll save more money the longer your solar panels continue to produce electricity. The good news is that it should take 25 years for most residential solar panels to have a noticeable drop in production, as long as they are kept clean and well maintained.
To ensure that your solar panels last, warranty is maintained, and you don’t have to perform costly repairs solar panels should ideally be cleaned every 6 months, have a thorough service inspection at least every 2 years and have the self-cleaning solar panel nano coating re-applied every 4 years to keep them performing well for 25 years and beyond.
